So, I'm going to be completely honest and say that my level of Chinese comprehension when it comes to reading is limited to food words like "beef noodle soup" and "chicken wing". Which is why I think I took a picture of the restaurant's entrance. If it says something along the lines of "Jing Fong Restaurant", perfect! If it says something like "acupuncture" or "buy one get one free" (haha, just kidding), please let me know.
That being said, I went to Chinatown with some girlfriends for dim sum today, and boy was this place intense. There was just a swarm of people in the lobby waiting for their number to be called, a host somehow yelling numbers in Cantonese and English through a microphone and walkie-talkie, and don't forget the two giant escalators heading upstairs. We were called fairly quickly though, and I soon realized why - they were seating parties together at banquet sized tables. Fortunately, this didn't faze my friends or the other people at the table, and we just ate avoiding eye contact with the strangers.
Overall, the food was pretty authentic and good! I enjoyed all of my favorites (including the softest BBQ pork bun), and I'd definitely go again. Yes, it's hectic and really loud, but I didn't expect to go to dim sum and enjoy a quiet meal. Speaking of loud, we shared our table with a family of four, and I kid you not, the little girl pulled out a mini-snare drum and starting hitting it while eating. I wasn't sure whether or not I thought it was hilarious or annoying. Either way, the meal was good, and I highly recommend!

I spot siu mai, one of my favorites! :) Sharing tables is pretty common in the Flushing area, though I'm not sure how other places do it. Dim Sum places are definitely loud, I notice that a lot of Chinese people (especially my dad, haha) talk like you're across the street when you're a foot or two away from them.
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone - my Chinese is terrible! I can barely read any, and the best I can do while socializing is the "how are you"-type phrases :P
I love dim sum!! :D
ReplyDeleteThe food looks so yummy ~
Definitely taking note of, I have a trip to New York soon <3

Haha I haven't been to yum cha in ages! I'm a bit of a picky eater but there's always something for me to eat - I love the prawn in the thin wrapping and the pork buns, haha.
ReplyDeleteI basically can't read any Chinese at all, so you're ahead of me at least...
I love dim sum so much- Its always a tradition for my family and I to go every few sundays , these images are making me drool!
ReplyDeleteWe have a new post up on our blog and would love to hear your thoughts!

Lovely Sunday. A hearty meal of dim sum is a great idea. Your photos made me salivate..ooh yum :)
ReplyDeleteI remember how yum cha was such a family affair, and that you'd gather at a restaurant with a large congregation of relatives over a marriage in the works, an anniversary, something of a milestone. And nowadays its much more common to eat their on your lunch break, only now, they've uped the ante with service and its almost like a systematic android staff they hire with their walkie talkies and what not haha. It looks authentic! I'm sick of the generic 'Chinese' foods I've seen that are just all 'mysteriously' mushy or beyond identification, overbasted with sweet and sour sauce or leave your lips with a greasy stain. These dimsum look soooo delectable, I wish I could've been there!
ReplyDeletelook so yummy!

Dim sum aka something I wish were more regular in my life. Alas, living outside the city renders that a moot point. I've realized whenever I go to Chinatown with my friends, we usually end up eating at Yummy Noodle or other good food places, but not dim sum. Hope your weekend has been well! xx
